Think about products or services you use. Now think of a pizza brand, you may mentally see the pizza box from Domino's Pizza® with its distinctive red and white dominos.

What comes to mind when you think of Charmin®? Squeezably soft?

We associate certain colors, packaging, tag lines and mascots with products and services of the businesses we use. Reputation and customer service also play a big part of business branding.

It's no different when people think about your business. Now you may not have the advertising and promotional budget of a Fortune 100 brand, but people in your area have formed associations with your products and services. Your business branding includes your reputation, including customer service.

What Do People Say When Your Business Comes Up In Conversation?

Are you known for your customer service? Do customers have a great experience when visiting your store? Do you help customers make informed buying decisions? If so, that is part of your brand. If poor customer service or a difficult time buying or using your service is part of your business, then it's also part of your brand.

People talk everyday, you know that, and it's not just about big businesses. It's about the businesses they use everyday.

Why Should You Care?

Most business owners want to continually grow their business. After all good customers do occasionally move away or even die and you want new customers to replace the ones that leave. That means you're searching for ways to reach prospective customers.

But ask yourself…

Do prospective customers you are targeting understand what you do?

If you own a men's clothing store, do prospective customers know your alterations are free for a customized fit?

Does your marketing speak to the unique needs of your targeted customers?

If you are a pediatrician, do you offer early morning call in for working parents?

Are you seen as an expert in your area of business?

Does your website tell visitors how to find an expert CPA to maximize their refund and avoid IRS problems? (By the way, your answer should include all the things making you the expert CPA including training and testimonials from happy clients.)

Today The Internet Is The New And Improved Phonebook

With the Internet today more and more people are searching online, for the answer or product for what they want. As a local business you can be more accessible and found easier than other local businesses and even competitors from around the world.

Now I know people in Portland Maine are not going to look for a plumber in Los Angeles. But you want to stand out and be the plumber of choice in Portland Maine.

All of these things affect how people perceive your brand. The reality is more and more people are searching for what they want and even need online.

Is Your Business Online?

Can people find your business online? If they type your name in Google what happens?

Does your website give you a believable presence?

Are you seen as the expert in your area of business or specialty?

What Do Potential Customers Find?

Start investigating your business as a potential customer. Understand what your brand is now and how people see your brand as your starting point. The reality is people are talking about your brand.

Do you know what they are saying?

Until the next time,
